On July 7th, 2026, Noto Satoyama Airport in Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan, will relaunch as Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport. What’s so special about it? Well, it is the world’s first Pokémon Airport to officially carry the Pokémon name! Running through September 2029, the transformation is the result of a partnership between Ishikawa Prefecture and the Pokémon With You Foundation. But behind the giant Pikachu balloon and the 111 Flying-type Pokémon installations is a story about a region still rebuilding from one of Japan’s worst earthquakes in a decade.
At Cover Page Media, we bring the stories behind the headlines. Let’s get into it!
On January 1st, 2024, a magnitude 7.6 earthquake struck Ishikawa Prefecture on Japan’s Noto Peninsula. This deadly phenomenon killed over 700 people and damaged over 200,000 structures and was considered Japan’s deadliest earthquake since the 2016 Kumamoto disaster. Two and a half years later, Noto is doing something nobody expected: it is rebuilding its tourism economy through one of the world’s most beloved entertainment franchises. Newsweek
On July 7th, 2026, Noto Satoyama Airport reopens as something entirely without precedent in global aviation.
World’s First Pokémon Airport Opens Its Doors!
On July 7th, 2026, Noto Satoyama Airport will reopen as the Noto Satoyama Pokémon With You Airport, the only airport in the world to officially bear the Pokémon name. This limited-period project, running through the end of September all the way in 2029, is the result of a partnership between Ishikawa Prefecture and the Pokémon With You Foundation. This is an initiative established to bring smiles and renewed energy to communities affected by the 2024 Noto Peninsula Earthquake. Asian Hospitality
And if you thought this is just a few branded posters in a departure lounge, you couldn’t be more wrong. The transformation is total- every surface, every installation, every experience inside and around the terminal has been redesigned around the Pokémon universe. (Pokémon fans you better go here!) And with particular focus on Flying-type Pokémon as a natural fit for an airport environment.
What Travelers Will Find Inside The World’s First Pokémon Airport
Inside the airport’s huge two-story atrium, visitors will be greeted by a giant Pikachu balloon soaring alongside an airplane and surrounded by all the Flying-type Pokémon. All the 111 Flying-type Pokémon discovered as of May 2026 will appear somewhere throughout the airport according to Hotel Online
The arrival lobby on the first floor features large-scale artwork based on Akarui Mirai which is a special recovery-support illustration that was originally created in 2024 to encourage the people of Noto after the earthquake. All the life-sized monuments of Pikachu, Plusle, and Minun greet arriving travelers.
The observation deck also called as the Pikachu’s Village, features a satoyama-inspired rural landscape scene populated by Pikachu figures. This is a deliberate nod to the Noto Peninsula’s traditional countryside character. Here’s something special-visitors can unlock original short videos on their smartphones while exploring the airport, including a story called “Fly, Bagon!” about a Bagon dreaming of flight.
A new piece of original artwork titled Kibou no Sora, Sky of Hope, was created specifically to commemorate the opening, depicting Pokémon flying through radiant skies beneath sparkling rainbows. This was to express the joy of flying freely and the hope of embarking on a new journey.
What It Means for the Travel Trade
For the travel industry, the Noto Pokémon airport represents something more significant than just a novelty case. It is a case study in destination marketing through the most important element, emotional storytelling. The Noto Peninsula is not Tokyo or Kyoto and it does not have the established tourism infrastructure to compete for international visitors on conventional grounds. But what it has, from July 7th, is a globally recognisable brand attached to an authentic human story. And that human emotional story is a product that is genuinely impossible to replicate anywhere else.
For aviation, the concept follows the popularity of Pokémon-themed aircraft liveries and the general appeal of Japan’s kawaii culture. Noto Satoyama is leaning into the immersive passenger experiences. Considering as airport terminals compete to become more than transport hubs, becoming destinations and attractions in their own right.
Tour operators serving the Japan market should be building Noto into Ishikawa itineraries now. The airport opens in 13 days, the themed buses launch in mid-July, and the window to be first with a Noto itinerary is closing in fast.
The world’s first Pokémon airport is not just a travel story. It is a recovery story, a brand story, and a destination marketing story and somehow Japan has found a way to make all three the same thing.
