Meghalaya is positioning itself as a leader in responsible travel through a series of strategic initiatives announced on World Tourism Day 2025. Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma introduced the OneConnect Tourism Helpline and a redesigned tourism website, alongside major policy reforms aimed at expanding accommodation capacity and creating thousands of new employment opportunities across the state.
Digital Infrastructure for Modern Travelers
The newly launched OneConnect Meghalaya Tourism Helpline represents India’s first multilingual tourist support service dedicated exclusively to visitor assistance. Operating daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., including holidays, the helpline provides real-time guidance on safety protocols, travel logistics, and destination recommendations.
Tourists can access the service through multiple channels: a toll-free number (1800-599-2026), WhatsApp and SMS (+91 76400 03050), or email (helpline@megh-tourism.com). The platform supports seven languages—English, Hindi, Bengali, Assamese, Khasi, Pnar, and Garo—ensuring accessibility for both domestic and international visitors.
The revamped tourism website complements this initiative by serving as a centralized resource for travel planning. Designed as a single-access point, the platform consolidates information on destinations, accommodations, activities, and local experiences, streamlining the planning process for visitors.
Addressing Accommodation Shortages Through Community Engagement
Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Homestay Mission
The cornerstone of Meghalaya’s tourism expansion is the Chief Minister’s Meghalaya Homestay Mission, which offers an unprecedented 70% subsidy funded entirely by the state government. Since its launch in 2023, the scheme has approved nearly 800 homestays with total investments approaching ₹100 crore. Currently, 237 units are operational, generating over 1,600 direct jobs throughout the state.
The mission addresses a critical gap in accommodation infrastructure while creating economic opportunities for local communities. Existing homestay owners can register their properties to receive an additional ₹50,000 incentive, encouraging standardization and quality improvement across the sector.
Innovative National Games Strategy
In a novel approach to event hosting, the state plans to utilize standardized homestays as accommodation for participants in the upcoming National Games. Chief Minister Sangma explained the rationale: rather than constructing a temporary games village, investing in permanent homestay infrastructure creates lasting value. After the games conclude, these facilities will serve the regular tourism market, ensuring long-term viability and return on investment.
Large-Scale Infrastructure Development
Meghalaya’s tourism transformation is supported by substantial infrastructure investments. Currently, 210 projects worth ₹3,625 crores are underway across the state. The DoNER Ministry has sanctioned an additional ₹260 crores specifically for developing Sohra (Cherrapunji) as a destination, recognizing its potential as a major tourist draw.
The hospitality sector is seeing significant expansion, with plans to establish eight 5-star hotels by 2030, including one in Tura. This development aims to cater to high-end travelers while maintaining the state’s commitment to sustainable and inclusive tourism practices.
Umroi Airport’s expansion, scheduled for completion by 2027, is expected to be a major catalyst for tourism growth. The upgraded facility will enable direct flights from major Indian cities, reducing travel time and improving connectivity for domestic and international visitors.
Community-Led Tourism Infrastructure Scheme
The government launched the Community-led Tourism Infrastructure Scheme to empower local organizations in developing tourism facilities. The program provides financial assistance of up to ₹25 lakhs per project for essential infrastructure such as pathways, viewing platforms, and visitor amenities.
During the launch event, Chief Minister Sangma awarded ₹10 lakh each to initial scheme recipients, demonstrating the government’s commitment to grassroots tourism development. More than 47 registered cooperative societies are affiliated with the Meghalaya Rural Tourism Cooperative Federation Ltd., with additional tourism societies operating under district administrations.
Dr. Vijay Kumar D., IAS, Commissioner & Secretary of the Department of Tourism, emphasized the dual-sided approach: “Tourism is all about empowerment of stakeholders on both sides. On one side, our own stakeholders in the state, then there is the demand side, which is basically the clientele who are coming into our state.”
Economic Impact and Job Creation
The tourism sector has emerged as a priority for Meghalaya over the past seven and a half years, with measurable results. Domestic tourist arrivals have reached 1.6 million, and the state has set an ambitious target to create 50,000 new jobs within the next three years.
The “concert economy” initiative exemplifies the state’s innovative approach to tourism marketing. A government investment of ₹23.5 crores generated returns exceeding ₹133 crores—a 5.6 times multiplier effect—while successfully establishing Shillong as a premier music destination on the global stage.
The PRIME Tourism Vehicle Scheme, which saw new vehicles flagged off during the launch event, supports tour operators in providing quality transportation services, creating additional employment opportunities in the tourism supply chain.
Responsible Tourism and Environmental Stewardship
Chief Minister Sangma stressed the importance of environmental responsibility and visitor safety as core principles of Meghalaya’s tourism strategy. The state’s approach balances economic growth with ecological conservation, ensuring that tourism development does not compromise the natural and cultural assets that attract visitors.
The recognition of Outlook Magazine’s Responsible Tourism Award winners at the event highlighted the state’s commitment to sustainable practices. These awards celebrate innovations and stewardship within the sector, encouraging continued excellence in responsible tourism management.
Looking Forward
Meghalaya’s tourism initiatives represent a coordinated effort to build a sustainable, inclusive, and economically viable sector. By combining digital infrastructure, community empowerment, and strategic investments in accommodation and connectivity, the state is creating a model for responsible tourism development that prioritizes both visitor experience and local benefit.

Stakeholders have affirmed their commitment to quality service delivery, recognizing that these initiatives will significantly enhance Meghalaya’s appeal as a tourist destination. The focus on authentic, human-centered experiences positions the state to attract discerning travelers seeking meaningful connections with local communities and natural environments.
