What Caused India’s Rise In Tourism For Japan?

According to preliminary data from the Japan Tourism Agency (MLIT), India has climbed the list as the fourth-largest contributor to tourism and leisure spending growth in Japan during 2025. This rise also marks a significant milestone in Indo-Japan tourism relations, showing an increase tourist numbers and expenditure by Indian travelers. The ranking also reflects the rising influence of India in Japan’s tourism economy. The tourism can be a result of cultural appeal, improved connectivity, and the growing disposable income among Indian tourists today.

The surge can also be explained because of the 35.2% increase in arrivals to Japan, with approximately 315,100 Indian visitors traveling to Japan in 2025 which is a significant increase from 233,061 in 2024. The important factors to credit for this growth include the impeccable direct air connectivity, which obviously helps a lot and is a targeted marketing strategy to make Japan appeal as a year-round destination. Another factor is the increasing interest in the Japanese culture (from cherry blossoms to anime), and the expanding of middle class in India with greater international travel aspirations.

How Much Are Indian Tourists Spending In Japan?

Indian tourists spent approximately 78.4 billion yen in Japan in 2025 alone! This is a 39.6% year-on-year increase from the 56.2 billion yen in 2024. That is almost an addition of 22.2 billion yen in spending. But why this rise in expenditure? Because Indian tourists are now turning towards premium travel experiences in Japan, with Indian tourists increasingly choosing accommodations on the higher end, fine dining, and curated cultural tours. If you calculate a per-person spending of an averaged 276,718 yen, it is definitely higher than the overall average of 224,806 yen of foreign tourists.

Here’s a detailed breakdown of that average. Indian tourists generally allocate their budgets in this manner- accommodation (43.8%), followed by food and beverages (18.7%) and shopping (17.7%). A growing desire for immersive and upscale experiences of the Indian tourists reflects in their choice of luxury urban hotels, traditional ryokans, and high-quality resorts. The trend of food tourism among Indian travelers is also on the rise which means they indulge in culinary explorations like the desire to try sushi, ramen, kaiseki, and other regional and hyped specialties like Hokkaido seafood.

Why Japan Appeals To Indian Travelers?

The main reason is Japan’s seasonal diversity, that enhances the country’s appeal. For example the iconic and most popular event that floods everyone’s social media feeds in February- the cherry blossoms in spring. Other famous activities include festivals and trekking in summer, the beautiful autumn foliage in fall, and skiing in Hokkaido during the winters. Because of this diverse range of activities and aesthetics, Japan is increasingly becoming popular among the Indian diaspora. Some of the major destinations include Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, and Hokkaido. These are often combined in multi-city itineraries facilitated by Japan’s efficient Shinkansen network.

Here Are Some New Travel Routes to Boost Indian Tourism to Japan

To support this rising Indian tourism demand, several new air routes are being launched in 2026:

Air India: Mumbai to Tokyo Haneda

  • Launch Date: June 15, 2026

  • Frequency: Four weekly non-stop flights

Aircraft: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

This flight connects India’s financial capital directly to Japan’s busiest airport- the best route for Indian Tourists! This option enhances access for business and leisure Indian travelers. This flight option also goes hand-in-hand with Air India’s existing daily Delhi–Tokyo Haneda service.

Japan Airlines (JAL): Tokyo Narita to Delhi

  • Launch Date: January 17, 2026

  • Frequency: Daily flights

Aircraft: Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

This flight option makes the bilateral connectivity stronger and also supports onward travel to North America via Narita making it easy for some travelers. JAL also expanded its codeshare with IndiGo. This allowed for smooth domestic connections across India.

Why the new routes? These new routes are part of a long-term strategy to meet the growing Indian demand for Japanese tourism, business, and cultural exchange. As mentioned above, with over 315,000 Indian visitors in 2025, Japan is enhancing air access in order to sustain tourism growth and hopefully to increase the density too.

Why Is Japan Making These Efforts?

Well because this is all a very important strategy. While globally, Germany ranks first, followed by Singapore and Malaysia in tourism, behind only Singapore and Malaysia, India ranks third in South and Southeast Asia for tourism spending growth, and is ahead of it’s regional peers in overall growth momentum. And therefore, Japan is actively tightening it’s ties with India through visa facilitation, promotional campaigns in Indian cities, and all the new flight routes, to continue to position itself as a preferred all-season destination for Indian travelers.
