At Cover Page Media, we bring to you the latest news in India and globally about the travel world. Today’s topic though not directly about travel, does affect it immensely.

India is currently facing a severe commercial LPG shortage

Yes, you read that right! And why we have come to this stage? Well, this is primarily triggered by the geopolitical tensions in West Asia involving Iran, Israel, and the United States. Along with disrupting air travel and the Airline industry, the conflict has disrupted shipping routes too, through the Strait of Hormuz. This is a critical energy corridor through which over 80% of India’s LPG imports pass! And now due to this, it has has led to delayed cargo movements, which in turn increased freight costs, and a sharp reduction in commercial LPG availability.

And why does that concern the travel industry? because this directly threatens the operations of restaurants and, by extension, the hotel industry.

Disruptions Caused In Major Cities

This crisis has hit major urban centers including Mumbai, Bengaluru, Chennai, and Delhi. Restaurants and hotels rely heavily on commercial LPG cylinders for daily cooking. Around 20% of hotels and restaurants have already shut down iMumbai. If supply is not restored, the India Hotels and Restaurant Association (AHAR) is warning that up to 50% could close within days! Similar disruptions have also being seen in Bengaluru, where the Bruhat Bengaluru Hotel Owners Association threatened city-wide shutdowns all due to non-delivery of commercial cylinders.

The Strain It Causes Restaurants

Becasue of this, restaurants are facing immediate operational challenges. Many of them are forced to shorten menus, reduce service hours, or operate on dwindling LPG stock. The owners have reported that commercial cylinders have “largely disappeared” from the supply chain, and the ones in the black market are of course being sold at inflated prices of up to ₹1,950 for a cylinder normally priced at ₹1,750. Some eateries, like Bangalore Thindi in Bengaluru according to press articles, have resorted to serving only beverages until supply resumes.

What Is The Government’s Response?

The Essential Commodities Act (ECA) and the Essential Services Maintenance Act (ESMA) have been put in action by the Indian government. This is done to prioritize domestic LPG supplies for households. Refineries have been directed to maximize LPG production, with additional output diverted exclusively to domestic use. The booking interval has been extended from 21 to 25 days for household cylinders to discourage hoarding. But sadly, commercial users receive no such priority, leaving them vulnerable to supply cuts.

The LPG supply requests from hotels, restaurants, and other industries will be reviewed by a high-level committee of executive directors from oil marketing companies (OMCs).

How Does This Impact The Hotel and Hospitality Sector

It impacts it immensely! The hotel industry is facing a cascading crisis. Because banquet bookings, kitchen operations, and guest services under threat. The Hotel Association of India (HAI) warns that continued disruption could jeopardize tax revenues, employment, and business continuity. The economic fallout could be significant, as an estimate of 40 lakh direct and 160 lakh indirect workers dependent on the hospitality sector.

Long-Term Shifts: Move Toward Electric Alternatives

Some restaurant operators are exploring electric cooking solutions as a long-term alternative in response to the crisis. Industry leaders like Shashank Shetty of Tattva and Roxanne Andheri suggest that electric kitchens could be more cost-efficient and safer over time. While LPG remains the dominant fuel, this crisis may accelerate the adoption of induction and electric stoves in Indian hospitality kitchens.

Impact On Hotel Bookings And Tourism In India

This ongoing commercial LPG shortage, caused by supply disruptions from the Strait of Hormuz due to West Asia conflicts, is highly affecting hotel bookings and tourism across India.

Immediate Impact on Hotel Operations and Bookings

  • In Mumbai, around 20% of hotels and restaurants have already shut down, and a warning is been out that up to 50% may close soon. Hotel closures and service suspensions are already being reported.

  • In Goa, it will directly impact tourism in the coastal state, as the Travel and Tourism Association of Goa (TTAG) has warned the Chief Minister that continued LPG shortages could lead to widespread hotel closures.

  • In Uttarakhand, key tourist destinations like Rishikesh, Haridwar, Nainital, and Mussoorie are already facing severe disruptions, with hotels like The Rampour Rishikesh reporting having only one day of fuel left. Including the Char Dham Yatra starting April 19, 2026, this crisis is threatening operations during the peak tourist and pilgrimage season.

Cancellations and Decline in Tourist Arrivals

  • International cancellations are rising as a result of this crisis, particularly from travelers in Iran, Israel, and the US, due to both the LPG crisis and broader air route instability from the ongoing West Asia conflict.

  • A three-star hotel chain in Rishikesh reported a whopping 130 cancellations in a single week. This signals the growing concern among international tourists.
