Today’s article is a good news! Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, is celebrating 18 years of continuous operations to India, marking a significant milestone in bilateral air connectivity between the two nations. The anniversary, commemorated in late March 2026, highlights the airline’s deepening ties with India, particularly South India, where routes to Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi have become central to its international network.
The airline first launched services to Thiruvananthapuram on January 25, 2008, establishing one of its earliest and most enduring international routes. Over the past 18 years, this corridor has evolved into a vital link for medical travel, tourism, trade, and the movement of Indian professionals working in the Maldives.
Strategic Growth Driven by Medical and Leisure Travel
India has emerged as a strategically crucial market for Maldivian, contributing 189,929 tourist arrivals in 2025—accounting for 8.5% of its total traffic. The airline credits Kerala’s robust public health system as a major driver of sustained demand, with Maldivian citizens frequently traveling to hospitals in Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi for specialized treatments, including cancer care.
This medical travel demand has directly influenced flight operations. Maldivian now operates five weekly flights each from Malé to Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi, primarily using Airbus A320 aircraft. During peak seasons, the larger Airbus A330-200 is deployed to meet demand. The airline also runs two weekly flights between Hanimaadhoo (in the northern Maldives) and Thiruvananthapuram, enhancing regional access.
Fleet Expansion and Future Routes
To support growing demand, Maldivian has expanded its fleet to 26 aircraft, including widebody and turboprop models for both international and domestic connectivity. The airline plans to induct one A330 and two ATR aircraft as part of its growth strategy.
Leadership has confirmed that Maldivian is evaluating expansion into two additional Indian cities, although specific destinations have not yet been disclosed. This follows the recent addition of Bengaluru in 2023 and Kochi in 2019, reflecting a steady southward and eastward push into India’s tier-1 and tier-2 markets.
Strengthening Bilateral and Community Ties
With nearly 100,000 Indian nationals living and working in the Maldives- a significant portion of the island nation’s 500,000 population- air connectivity serves both economic and social functions. Indians are employed across sectors including healthcare, education, construction, and tourism, reinforcing the need for reliable air links.
Maldivian has also partnered with Indian travel agencies to launch joint promotional campaigns and curated travel packages, ranging from budget guesthouses to luxury resorts, making the Maldives accessible to a broader Indian demographic.
Commemorative Events and Leadership Statements
In March 2026, Maldivian hosted special events in Thiruvananthapuram, bringing together stakeholders, partners, and long-serving employees. Commemorative awards were presented to honor contributions over the 18-year journey.
Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Maldivian, stated: “India has been an integral part of Maldivian’s international journey.” He emphasized that the milestone is not just about operations, but a tribute to staff, partners, and customers who have supported the airline’s growth.
Ahmed Shafeeu, Chairman of Island Aviation Services Limited, highlighted that medical tourism, trade, and diaspora links have been key to the airline’s success in India.
