Réunion Island is significantly strengthening its presence in the Indian travel market. And now with the launch of direct IndiGo flights from Chennai, that start from April 29th, 2026 onwards, the influence is just going to increase. This strategic move marks a major step in making the French overseas territory more accessible to Indian travelers. And especially those in South India.

At Cover Page Media, we bring you the latest updates from the global travel world. Let’s dive into today’s headline.

If you are wondering- What island is this? Réunion Island is a French overseas department located in the Indian Ocean. It is approximately 700 km east of the island of Madagascar and 175 km southwest of the well-known Mauritius. As of January 2026, it has a population of 910,985, and Saint-Denis its largest city is its capital.

Here’s how IndiGo is contributing:

Flight Details

  • Airline: IndiGo

  • Route: Chennai (MAA) ↔ Réunion Island (RUN)

  • Aircraft: the Airbus A320

  • Frequency: Three times weekly that is Wednesdays, Fridays and Sundays

  • Flight Numbers:

    • 6E 1871 (Chennai → Réunion Island) which departs 12:20 and arrives 17:10

    • 6E 1872 (Réunion Island → Chennai): which departs 18:10 and arrives 02:10 (+1)

  • Flight Duration: it is about 6 hours 20 minutes

  • Significance: The Réunion Island officially becomes IndiGo’s 46th international destination and 13th from Chennai.

Strategic Impact on the Indian Market:

The launch is part of a broader strategy by the Réunion Island Tourism Board. This is in collaboration with Atout France India, and its aim is to position the island as a premium, offbeat destination for Indian travelers who are seeking unique, experience-driven holidays.

Key pillars of the strategy include:

  1. Enhanced Air Accessibility: Direct flights eliminate the need for the multi-leg journeys via hubs like Mauritius or Dubai, This significantly improves convenience and therefore becomes more accessible.

  2. Trade Partnerships: Building strong relationships with Indian travel agents, DMCs, and tour operators in order to promote curated travel packages.

  3. Customized Experiences: Tailoring itineraries for Indian travelers that focus on adventure, nature, culture, and gastronomy too.

Why Réunion Island Appeals to Indian Travelers?

  • Visa Advantage: This is the most important point, Indian nationals can stay up to 15 days without a visa! With options to extend up to 90 days per six months.

  • Cultural Resonance: The island has a significant Indian diaspora and also cultural influences from Indian, African, European, and Creole traditions. A culture-rich destination.

  • Unique Experiences:

    • Adventure: Hiking, canyoning, mountain biking and paragliding

    • Aerial views: Helicopter tours over Piton de la Fournaise, which is literally an active volcano!

    • Marine activities: Diving, snorkeling and paddleboarding

    • UNESCO Sites: Pitons, Cirques, and Remparts of the Réunion Island

Réunion Island holds a unique cultural appeal for Indian travelers due to its deep-rooted Indian heritage. This heritage was shaped by over 120,000 indentured laborers from South India, Gujarat, Bihar, and Bengal, all who arrived between 1820 and 1917. Today, people of Indian origin make up to 30–35% of the population! This creates a living blend of Indian and Creole cultures.

Key cultural connections include:

  • Religion: The island is home to vibrant Hindu temples like the Colosse Temple in Saint-André and the historic Casernes temple. Diwali and Cavadee are widely celebrated, with Diwali drawing thousands in colorful processions.

  • Architecture: South Indian craftsmen introduced Pondicherry-style Creole architecture, visible in homes and temples, using traditional techniques like argamaste (a lime and sugarcane juice plaster).

  • Language: Tamil and Hindi words are woven into the local Réunion Creole, and many family names reflect their Indian roots, though often Frenchified (e.g., Vaidyalingam → Vaitilingam).

  • Cuisine: Indian flavors are central to Réunionnaise food, with dishes like cari (curry), rougaille, and samoussas blending Tamil, Gujarati, and French influences.

  • Intangible HeritageBal tamoul (Tamil dance) was added to France’s national inventory of intangible cultural heritage in 2022, recognizing its enduring legacy.

For Indian travelers, Réunion offers a rare chance to see Indian traditions preserved and evolved in a French tropical setting. Quite a unique blend indeed! Making it not just a destination, but a journey into beautiful shared ancestry.

Target Audience

The destination is positioned for affluent, experiential travelers, honeymooners, adventure seekers, nature lovers, and MICE groups, all who are looking beyond conventional beach holidays.

With this launch, Réunion Island aims to become a go-to destination for Indian travelers seeking a blend of luxury, authenticity, and adventure in a French tropical setting.
