Air India Express announced on June 21th, 2026 that it will become the first airline to operate international flights from Navi Mumbai International Airport. It will do this launching direct services to Abu Dhabi from July 15th. The route now officially gives the Mumbai Metropolitan Region its second international gateway and opens one of the world’s busiest aviation corridors from a brand new airport. Bookings are already open.

At Cover Page Media, we bring you the top stories from the global travel world.

As per yesterday, India’s newest airport just got its first international route, and the destination could not have been more fitting.

Air India Express has just announced the launch of new direct flights between Navi Mumbai International Airport and Abu Dhabi. They have become the first airline to operate international services from Maharashtra’s newest airport. Flights commence from July 15th, 2026, with an initial frequency of two weekly services, which will be scaling to three weekly flights from July 29th.

The Abu Dhabi route is not just a new flight, but the moment Navi Mumbai International Airport crosses from a domestic node into a full-on genuine international gateway, and it does so on one of the most commercially robust aviation corridors in the world.

Why Did Air India Express Choose This Route, Why Now

The India-UAE travel corridor needs no introduction to anyone in the travel trade. Considering that over three million Indian nationals live in the UAE, this creates a constant, year-round demand for affordable, frequent flights. It is a market that supports dozens of daily services across multiple carriers and also consistently ranks among the world’s highest-volume international routes.

What makes the Navi Mumbai launch significant is the geography. It’s common knowledge that Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has been operating under severe capacity constraints for years. This is a problem that affects not just travelers from the city itself but also the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region. This and including the rapidly growing suburbs of Navi Mumbai, Thane, Panvel, Kharghar, and the broader Raigad district.

Launching from Navi Mumbai gives Air India Express an opportunity to tap into demand from these rapidly growing suburbs. And doing so while also providing a genuine alternative for travelers who would otherwise need to battle traffic to reach Mumbai’s primary airport. Especially those travelling up from Pune.

The early morning schedule reinforces this. Flights depart Abu Dhabi at 5:45am, arriving Navi Mumbai at 10:20am. The return departs Navi Mumbai at 2:55am, reaching Abu Dhabi at 4:35am. These are timings designed to align with long-haul connections from Abu Dhabi into Europe, Africa, and the Americas. It’s not a point-to-point leisure route but a connecting infrastructure play.

The First-Mover Advantage For Air India Express

Air India Express has secured a notable and impressive first-mover advantage at Navi Mumbai International Airport by becoming the airport’s first international operator. In aviation this is significant as the first-mover position at a new airport matters, it shapes slot allocation, route awareness, and brand association with the facility for years to come. Something noteworthy is that passengers discovering the new airport for the first time will discover it through Air India Express.

As Navi Mumbai International Airport scales up, it will be adding more airlines, more routes, and more international destinations but Air India Express will be the carrier that established the template. As airlines continue to evaluate opportunities at Navi Mumbai Airport, the Gulf is likely to emerge as one of the first major international growth markets. And guess what- Air India Express is already there.

What It Means for the Trade

For travel agents and corporate travel managers serving clients in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, this route is immediately bookable and not to mention, operationally significant. Bookings are now open on the airline’s website, mobile app, and all other major booking channels.

The practical value proposition for clients in Navi Mumbai, Thane, and surrounding areas is straightforward: direct access to Abu Dhabi. And through Abu Dhabi, onward connections across Etihad’s global network. All this without the traffic, the congestion, and the uncertainty of Mumbai’s primary airport.

For the India-UAE corridor as a whole, another frequency is commercially welcome. Air India Express already operates one of the largest India–West Asia networks, connecting multiple Indian cities with Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE. Now this Navi Mumbai launch extends that network to a catchment area that has been underserved for international travel despite its size and purchasing power.

Navi Mumbai’s first international flight departs July 15th. The airport’s global story has begun.
