Saudia is the national flag carrier of Saudi Arabia. It has officially launched its Hajj 2026 operations ahead of the season, allocating over one million seats across its network to transport global pilgrims. This operation successfully began on April 18, 2026. It began with the arrival of flight SV5807 from Dhaka, carrying around 376 pilgrims at King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah

At Cover Page Media, we bring to you the latest news form the global travel industry.

Key Operational Highlights of Hajj 2026 operations:

  • Fleet and Capacity: There would be a dedicated fleet of 160 aircraft that will support the 75-day operation. They will be connecting pilgrims from 145 international destinations to the holy cities of Makkah and Madinah.

  • Makkah Route Initiative: Well about over 179,000 pilgrims will benefit from this program, completing immigration, visa stamping, and baggage tagging at their departure airports itself significantly streamlining the arrival procedures and fastening the process.

  • Luggage First Service: Approximately 330,000 bags and 230,000 bottles of Zamzam water will be transported directly to accommodations, reducing the physical strain on pilgrims.

Enhanced Passenger Experience

Saudia has gone one step ahead and introduced tailored in-flight services, including:

  • Miqat announcements 30 minutes before crossing the sacred boundaries

  • Broadcast of Talbiyah and also a dedicated inflight entertainment channel with educational content on Hajj and the Umrah rituals

  • Pre-issued boarding passes for both arrival and return journeys at international departure points

The airline is operating in close coordination with the Ministry of Hajj and Umrah and the Pilgrim Experience Program. This is aligning with Saudi Vision 2030 goals to elevate religious tourism and also to support the target of hosting 30 million Umrah and Hajj visitors by 2030

As we all know, Saudia faces several significant challenges in managing the Hajj 2026 operation:

  • Geopolitical and Security Threats: With the ongoing regional tensions, including Iranian missile and drone threats, have raised security concerns. While the holy cities of Mecca and Medina have not been targeted, yet the risk of stray projectiles or falling debris from intercepted attacks still poses a potential danger to pilgrims and infrastructure.

  • Flight and Airspace Disruptions: Despite Jeddah and Madinah airports remaining operational, flight schedules are significantly disrupted. With airlines like British Airways and Lufthansa having suspended or reduced services, and EASA advises avoiding most Saudi airspace, forcing for longer flight routes and last-minute cancellations.

  • Tight Operational Deadlines: The Umrah visa window has closed, with strict entry and exit deadlines like last entry by April 2nd, final exit by April 18, 2026). This compressed timeline increases pressure on logistics and coordination.

  • Massive Passenger Volume: Transporting well over one million pilgrims from 145 global destinations within a 75-day window is no easy task and demands flawless coordination across the 160 aircrafts as well as all the other processes like ground handling, immigration via the Makkah Route initiative, and baggage logistics.

  • Passenger Safety and Experience: This is the top priority- Ensuring pilgrim well-being amid extreme heat risks and potential crowd management issues remains critical, especially with millions converging in a short period.
